Ethical Dilemma

June 2, 2006

Today, we have an assignment to do. It is: You have to come up with your own ethical dilemma situation. It could be a true story that has happened to you or someone else, or a completely fictional story that is still applicable to your situation as a 6th grade, midde school student. Write out your story and ask questions at the end. An ethical dilemma story is one where there are no right or wrong answers outright or at all. It is a situation involving an individual or several people. It is usually the type of story where you are caught in between a rock and a high place. Go ahead and give it a shot — write out an ethical dilemma and invite your classmates to read and comment — answer questions.

This is my ethical dilemma.

But before I get to the story, I am one of the characters but I won’t tell you and this is a real dilemma, but not of me…someone else. And the character’s names are not their real names!
Bob was a new student in this school but he went to this school when he was kindergarten-2nd grade. He didn’t know Ren but he knew Kenny because Kenny went to this school before when Bob was here. They weren’t really friends when they were younger. Now they are in 6th grade.

Bob came and was really nice to everyone. Then Bob and Ren became best friends and since Bob as nice to everyone, Kenny became nice to Bob and they became friends. It was okay for Ren because Ren was friends with Kenny during 5th grade. Anyways, Bob was also friends with Chris.

Chris, Bob, and Ren would always hang with each other and help each other. Kenny was also a friend but t\didn’t hang out with us. In P.E., Ren, Andrew, and Bob are in the same class. And volleyball is the quarter sport.

One day, Bob, Kenny, and Ren had a serve test. Ren went first and hit the ball of over the net. Bob went next. He missed. Then, suddenly, Kenny started laughing at Bob. Bob went back to the line and looked sad. Ren founf out what happened and backed Bob up by laughing at Kenny.

  • How did Kenny feel when Ren backed Bob up?
  • How do you think Bob felt when Kenny laughed at Bob?
  • Do you think Ren did the right thing?

Here’s another ethical dilemma.

Brendan was in third grade when he was caught cheating on his math quiz. He had been doing poorly in math and his parents had threatened that if he didn’t raise his grades they wouldn’t let him play on the baseball team. So he cheated. When the teacher asked him about it, he denied it at first, but finally admitted to writing down the answers ahead of time.

A parent conference was called and Brendan had to sit with his parents, the teacher, and the principal to discuss the school policy on cheating and lying. On the way home, his father told Brendan he was deeply disappointed in him and expected more from him in the future. That night, Brendan felt like the whole world was against him, but he also felt guilty for letting his parents down.

That weekend, Brendan and his family went to a movie. When they got to the ticket window Brendan’s dad asked for children’s tickets for both Brendan and his 16 year old brother. Brendan looked over at his brother, who stared down at the sidewalk and hunched his shoulders hoping the ticket seller wouldn’t notice that he was well above the age for a child’s ticket. The ticket seller glanced suspiciously back and forth between the father and the brother, and then, with a doubtful look on her face, she handed them the the two child’s tickets. This happened every time they went to the movies, and it always made Brendan feel weird.

On the way home from the movie, Brendan asked his father why it was okay to lie and cheat the theater out of money but not to cheat on his math quiz. His dad responded that sometimes its okay to lie as long as nobody gets hurt.

The rest of the way home Brendan just got more and more confused. Cheating on his test hurt nobody. He didn’t steal the answers from any of the other students. If he hadn’t gotten caught, he would have been praised.  How was what he did different from what his dad did over and over again? And should he continue to stay silent the next time his dad lied?
  • What is Brendan’s dilemma?
    Brendan cheated.
  • Have you ever seen an adult or friend do something you felt wasn’t right? What did you do? How did it make you feel? I’ve seen my friend do something really messed up but I didn’t say anything because he is my friend. But it made me realize that he wasn’t a good friend. (This happened in the states! Just saying)
  • Do you think Brendan should try to talk to his Dad again about his lying at the movies?  I don’t really think it is necesary because the dad already told him that it doesn’t hert anyone.
  • Who might Brendan have hurt by cheating on his quiz? The person he copied from and probably his friends because it is telling them that he can get answers from your paper.
  • Brendan’s Dad said it was okay to be dishonest if no one was hurt. Who do you think might have been hurt by his lying at the movie ticket office? The Movie Ticket manager and his assistance because they need the money.
  • Have you ever felt like doing (or have you actually done) the “wrong thing” because you felt like it was worth it? Do you still feel that it was worth it? One time, I felt like getting somthing from someone I hated before and I thought later on that it wasn’t worth it. Now I think is is USELESS!

Being yourself

May 26, 2006

Hello people! Today I am going to talk about being yourself and I am also going answer questions which you can too. Just comment me. Anyways, here’s how to be yourself.

HOW TO BE YOURSELF

It’s not always easy to be ourselves. Sometimes, when we’re with other people, we make choices or act in ways that are different from when we’re alone. Here are some ways to prevent that from happening.
• Know your values and stay true to them.*
• Make your own choices, don’t just go along with the crowd.
• Respect yourself.
• Think about your goals and act accordingly.

Think about these questions and see how you answer them.

1. When somebody says “just be yourself,” what does that mean? I don’t think there is a meaning to that. I just think of it as just be yourself.

2. Is it always easy to be yourself, or can it sometimes be difficult? Why? How? Give examples. For me, I think it is easy to be myself at home because it’s my home and all around me are my family. It is difficlut to be myself in school or in different places because…well…..I’m not really sure. But I mean, in school, I’m technically with my family, which are my classmates, because I stay with them most of the day. I think it is a natural thing but it’s very hard to explain.
3. A lot of kids around talk about “fitting in.” What does “fitting in” mean? How do you do it? Well, I think fitting in is like joining or being part of a group for a certain thing. I usually fit in because I am not myself. I try to be like them so I can fit in. Many people aren’t themselves when they try to fit in.

4. Is it true that there is a lot of pressure in this school? What do you have to do to fit in here? Not really. You just have to be yourself and then friends will come to you. But to tell the truth, it is hard to be yourself. But that is a good way to get friends. BE YOURSELF!
5. Does fitting in ever make it hard to be yourself? Yes like I said in question 3 and question 9.
6. What if you don’t fit in? Is that okay, or does it mean there’s something wrong with you? If you don’t fit in, that just means your different. Being different is a good thing. But there is nothing wrong with yourself.
7. Are there groups here in school? Cliques? (Gangs) What are they? There are many groups in this school but not really gangs. Well, maybe a lot of gangs. It depends on the definition. Gangs can mean groups of friends like I am in a gang with my friend and gangs can also be people who bully people and do illegal stuff like….stealing.
8. Why do these groups exist? What do they do for the people in them?I think the bad gangs exist because there is nothing to do, they get drunk so they bully people, they think it is cool, and many more things. I think the good gangs exist because friends always have to talk in a group.
9. Does being in a group sometimes make it harder to be yourself? How? In what way? Examples? Yes. Like I said in question 3, it is very hard to be in a group with out being yourself. You try to act like them. (EXAMPLE OF SOME ONE ELSE……NOT GOING TO TELL YOU WHO IT IS!) I try to fit in with the popular people so I act popular when actually I’m not.
10. Are there pressures to fit into these groups? If so, describe the pressures. Yes there are. You have to do what they want you to do, you have to sometimes do crazy things, you usually get in touble, etc.

Mother’s Day

May 16, 2006

Hello People!

My family didn’t…sorry to say… but we didn’t celebrate Mother’s Day, although, I did give her a gift. I gave her a card from and not from my brothers that said….umm….I forgot……I also got her a card from all of us that said…..umm……I also forgot….And last, I gave her candy. The type of candy that she loves. It is: 100 grand candy.jpg100 grand!

She love it because it is chocolate with caramel inside. Anyways, I hope my mom enjoyed the present. I guess now I should think about what I will get for my dad for Father’s Day!

If there was a holiday I could make, It would be Kid’s Day so kids will have a chance to have power and rule the world!…Just Joking! But if we could do that, It should be on April Fools Day!

That’s all the time I have right now. Bye People!

#13b - Bullying

April 27, 2006

Hello!

I want to talk to everyone about bullying.

Bullying is a very bad thing. I define bullying as messing with someone in a bad way. And I think everyone has been bullied before. I have, and it doesn’t feel good at all.

To stop people from bullying you, you can either tell a teacher, avoid the person, or stop talking to the person.

If I see one of my friends being bullied, I would hold the bully back as long as I could so my friend can go, I would make my other friends make sure the friend being bullied doesn’t get hurt while I call a teacher, or bring a whole group of people to guard the person being bullied or bring the whole group and scare the bully.

This is how being bullied is like:

This is how people would feel:

#11b- Picture I took in Computer class

April 26, 2006

Hello!

Yesterday in computer class, our class had a chance to take a picture of the person after your number. Like my class number is #6. Yeah. So anyways, I took a picture of number 7’s screen. Here it is:

mypic.jpg

It wasn’t hard at all to do this. But I accidentally moved the camera and it kind of messed the picture up. But it doesn’t matter. I think it is still nice. Oh well. Bye!

#10b - Subjects

April 25, 2006

Today we did many things for Math, P.E., Social Studies , English, and more.

For Math- In the begining, we did Mad Minutes-which were math questions that were timed, we did a mental math game- which was called Jonas Bonus– which was to find the ages. The only information the teacher gave us for the game was that the sum of the ages was 47. We also talked about proportions and scales and many more.
If there was one thing that I can change for Math is more mental Math games, and less textbook things because it will help us to get better and faster.

For English- The Giver.jpgWe kept reading from where we left of in the Giver. The Giver is about a perfect community which means that every thing was in order or clean and if they did something bad, they would be released which means that they would be kicked out of the community. Although, they didn’t know where they would go if they were released. If there is one thing that I can change for English is to not go so fast so I can learn better of what we are talking.

In P.E.- football.jpgIn P.E., we have 4 different classes. One class is in Mrs. Quan’s, the other class is in Mrs. Carrera’s, another class is in Mr. Peter’s, and the last class is in Mr. Shepherd’s. I am in Mr. Shepherd’s class and we are doing flag football. In flag football, in order to pick the team, there were to team captains which were the reeally good people. They were Andrew Lee and Jacques Odi. Andrew Lee picked me along with my other sixth grade classmates: Margaret, Alvin, Claire, and Brian. Andrew Lee also picked good people like the eighth grader Amadeus. Playing flag football is fun. I’m usually a wide reciever. Margaret Brian and Claire are usually linebackers. Alvin is sometimes linebacker or sometimes wide reciever with me. Alvin is really good. He  would usually get peoples flag. If there was one thing that I can change in P.E. is more miles. I love running!

In Social Studies- We got our quizzes back and talked about it almost the whole period. In that quiz, I didn’t get really bad but I also didn’t get very good. Anyways, After talking about the test, Mrs. Naz, our teacher, let us pick groups for our next vodcast. Picking groups made many people argue and also made a lot of people sad. I picked Isaac, Raine, and Soo Jin. They are really good. Thats about all we did today. If there was one thing I could change for Social Studies is less G.R.A.’s because the last one was really long and many people stayed up very late doing the G.R.A. Also we should make more vodcasts! It is very fun.

In Science- In the beginning of Science, we reviewed on the subject because we were going to have a big test after. And we did. The test was very easy except for the esaay questions. That’s about everything we did today. If there was one thing I can change for Science is more experiments, less presentations because of time, and more games and contests.

For Computer- comp.jpgIn Computer, we continued on catch up, we took pictures of peoples screen and learned how to put pictures in a post.

 Extra

For Lunch- In Lunch I did the same thing I do every lunch time which is:

  1. Buy Lunch
  2. Eat
  3. Talk with my friends
  4. Go to snack shack for snack
  5. Then wait for our computer teacher comes
  6. Line Up
  7. Go to class.

For Break or Recess- Break or Recess is very short and we barely do any thing. Break is only 15 minutes long. What I do everyday is:

  • Get my snack downstairs
  • Visit the snack shack
  • Play
  • Eat snack
  • Play again
  • Get Ready for class

After School- Run.jpgAfter School, I have many things to do. I joined track with my classmates Raine, Jared, Isaac, Nick, and Daniel. Track is almost the same as Cross Country. It’s from 3:45 p.m. to 5 p.m. After that, I go to my mom’s room and do my homework, then then after that, if i’m done, I would go to the playground.playground.jpg

#9b - Suprise Contest

April 25, 2006

Hello!

Today, we did a surprise contest which was very fun! What we had to do is to login to the blog and if your first, second, or third, you would win chocolate from the teacher. I messed up on logging in which made me lose because it slowed me down.

I think we should make a contest on who can make the most posts I guess. And also, to go with it, the prize shouldn’t be chocolate because it will melt, but it should be something sour.
